Need some help uploading firmware.

Post by fifty »

I have a V2.0.1 board from about 2 1/2 years ago and I can't figure out how to upload the firmware. Anyway, the board passes all of the bench tests, so I suspect it's good.

I tried to use this link: http://picasso.org/mjlj/source/release_ ... 08sprg.exe
to download the software that I hoped would let me upload the firmware to my board - when I double-click on the icon, something flashes across the screen ...then nothing.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks,
Iain

Ahh, dont double click that icon, instead:

Click Start > Run
type cmd (or command if cmd doesnt work) and press OK
Welcome to DOS world, now you have to type some things to navigate to a directory where hc08sprg.exe is.

Since you new and all, I suggest you copy the hc08sprg.exe into C:\

then from the DOS window type cd \ and press ENTER

then type hc08sprg.exe and press ENTER, it will display a list of switches available. You want to type

hc08sprg 4 4800 file.s19 and press ENTER, then follow instructions if any

in the above, 4 is the serial port number to use, you should replace it with proper number.

Firmware installation instructions.

Hi Ian.

You can find the firmware upgrade instructions in the documentation section- link at top.

Be sure you are uploading the 2.7.0 firmware for your V2.x board!

Thanks! That makes more sense - I will try it in a minute. Does it matter that the CPU I have came directly from Digikey and is not yet programmed?

OK, I tried it, used the hc08sprg-kx8.abs.s19 bootloader from this page: Utilities> Bootloader firmware for the KX8 processor
http://picasso.org/mjlj/?q=node/522

I put the hc08sprg-kx8.abs.s19 file into the c/ folder and then tried to upload it via your instructions (I substituted "file.s19" in your instructions for "hc08sprg-kx8.abs.s19"). The message I get is: Waiting for HC08 reset ACK... - doesn't go any further.

What am I doing wrong?

Unfortunately, it does :-(

You can only update the firmware via the "bootloader" that is put into the CPU by Brent when you purchase one from him. A 'bare' CPU straight from the supplier will not have the bootloader, so hc08sprg will not work

How does the bootloader get into the CPU - with a 'hardware programmer' that Brent has - or you could get hold of if you had $100 or so to spare, and be happy with using such a device

You remember what you did

You remember what you did more than two years ago? Double check, maybe you do have a good CPU.

Here is what you do, download a tuner for your board version, here are links:

<a href="http://www.picasso.org/mjlj/?q=filestor ... ler.exe</a>

Connect Megajolt to computer, and hit Get Config. If Megajolt with a valid CPU is connected on that serial port you will Get Config, if not, you will get an error. Try a different port if it fails, if you not sure on which port you have Megajolt go from port 1 to 6. Basically if youre unable to connect and your power is wired well, and you 100% sure you in fact ordered the CPU from DigiKey. You may order a CPU from Brent, make sure to mention you have version 2.x board.

When you get to burning firmware again, the file you want to use is here <a href="http://picasso.org/mjlj/dist/mjlJunior_ ... 7.0.s19</a>

Ian, if you want to send me

Post by brentp »

Ian, if you bought the processor from digi-key it certainly does not have the bootloader. If you want to send me the processor I can flash it with the bootloader and firmware for a nominal fee. Just send me an email offline and we'll work something out.
