Crank Sensor Wheels
Any information out there on different crank sensor wheels? I know of two- the one off of the 1.9L ford escort, and the 5.0L mustang motor (year ??).
The mustang version is smaller than the ford escort, but comes seperately from the crank pulley- the ford escort version requires the pulley to seperated from the sensor wheel.

Hi Brent,
Well I went with the trigger wheel off the 4.6l that was mentioned in another message. It's official part number is:
F2LZ12A227BB
Engine - Engine parts - Ring - Ign pulsator c/s sen
Ign pulsator c/s sen - 4.6 liter Sohc 1999 - 2003
I went to our local Ford dealer and gave them the part number. $15 and some change later I had my very own trigger wheel! Since I'm using this on a 4 cylinder EDIS module, I hope the smaller diameter won't hurt. It seems that the signal won't change, as there are the same number of teeth, moving at the same angular velocity. Maybe the voltage level would be different, because the surface velocity is different between the two. Oh well, I'll find out!

Squeaky Wheels
I've mounted a trigger wheel from a 96 3.8 V6 Tbird. I am now working on the sensor mounting. This wheel is especially easy to use, because it comes with a flat mounting flange that is pre drilled with four holes. This wheel bolts to the back of the 3.8 balancer so is simple to remove. The O.D. of the teeth is about 4.75 and the I.D of the mounting flange is 2.77

Can ya'll post pictures of your trigger wheels. The trigger wheel from other Ford maybe better for my engine. If you can post pictures, send it though e-mail to kingart@comcast.net

I'd prefer to stay with the trigger wheel from the 1.9L ford escort, but it's one that has to be seperated from the harmonic balancer. It's a larger wheel which would work better with the stock crank pulley.
A database of different wheels would be helpful...

Okay, I'll stay with the Esco
Okay, I'll stay with the Escort trigger wheel. How are most people getting it mounted on there pulley? I thought about mounting it behind my pulley like the escort has it, but not sure if it will hit the timing belt.

Can someone give me some idea
Can someone give me some ideas on how the mount the trigger wheel on the pulley? Are ya'll welding them, making adapters or what? Pictures would help.
trigger wheel mounting
I've just used a Mig welder to attach my wheel. just done 4 "spot" welds 90 degrees apart round the inside of the trigger wheel (came from an escort I think). Did consider epoxying it as well but welding was quicker.

Pic your Trigger
Here are some shots of how I mounted my trigger wheel. All the parts bolt to the harmonic balancer.

The full size of some of the shots is quite large. Because I could not locate just the right size water pump pulley, I had to shim it out so far that the fan clutch would no longer mount correctly. Thus the electric fans, and Uber alternator.

That was good work. Did you do the adapter yourself or have someone do it? How much?
My pulley is similar to yours but I would have to mount it in the front of the pulley because I have a timing belt that it might hit. Sometime next week I will get a fix it up to the pulley to check the fit.

Wheel Adapter
Thanks, I made it on a medium sized lathe. I bought an inch and a half thick piece of 4 inch aluminum stock at my local metal supply, Patton's. It was around 8 dollars. I discovered later that I had measured wrong, and could have used half that, and trimmed an hour off of the build time.
As for your car, most belt driven systems use a beveled plate behind the balancer to keep the belt in position. If you can make an adapter that will still use this, it should be no problem. However, if you move the front pulley out, the rest of the accessories will have to be shimmed out too. This = no fun.
As for my set up, I am very lucky that the 455 Olds uses a balancer pulley that is the same mounting size as most GM V8s, so I was able to find one at the Pick-a-Part that was an inch or so shorter, with the same belt pattern. Sadly, it was also a half inch larger in diameter, and hit the water pump pulley. <curse curse, one week bumming rides because I was too obstinate to reassemble the old parts> I was unable to find a water pump pulley that was both smaller in diameter, and the right offset. Thus the need to shim it out, and the loss of the fan. I am now on a first name basis with several of the guys at Pick-a-Part....

Working with a fabricator to make cheap trigger wheels
Hi all,
I am working with a fabricator, Kevin Johnson to make trigger wheels for members of the group. See this link for examples of his work. Any thoughts on right sizing, or other specs?
Here is his email:
Hi Greg,
This is something I made up this morning. It is going to be typical of the type of work the plasma cutter can do -- it is not a CNC milling machine but then again I would not charge like it is either.
There is variance between the teeth as you can see and the striations and kerf angle is typical on the edges. I can make the wheel bigger and the differences will be proportionately less. I will make up a series of standard designs in 12 gauge steel and they will be $12.50 each plus shipping (let me know what you think these standards designs should be). If people need the dimensions/tooth-count altered then there would be an additional $10 charge. I think that is pretty much a bargain for essentially one-off parts.
Shipping by priority mail should be around $5 per.
Kind regards,
Kevin Johnson

1.9 Escort Wheel
I used the stock Escort wheel, removed it from the harmonic balancer which was very easy, Then machined a step on my hub to fit the inside diameter of the trigger wheel. Looked at the picture of the plasma cut wheel and it is very rough and not as wide as the Ford origional. I personally would not go that way. If I get away from this job in AZ I will take some pictures of my wheel on my hub and will post it.

Trigger Wheel 1999-2003 4.6 L SOHC
Hi Jeff,
is it possible that you measure your trigger wheel and post it?
The outermost diameter would be fine...
Also, someone mentioned Mustang wheels that I found on
http://www.seanhylandmotorsport.com/online (go to QuickFind and search for "trigger") but also don't know the dimensions...
TIA,
Dean

trigger wheel
Hi Paratime,
may you give me the Ford registration number of your trigger wheel? In Europe we have another trigger wheel for edis, but there is not enough space in my engine bay, but I think with your wheel it would work. PLEASE!!
Thanx! 12joy
