Hi
Im almost up and running. After getting REALLY tired of F****** around with USB adapters I took out the old toshiba 1910 laptop. it currenty runs java 1.3 (i know its old but its the newest aprroved for 95), and added the tuner program. when I try to run it, it tells me: "Could not find the main class, program will exit!" the other program(1260) cant find a shfolder.dll file. I have since found that file and added it to windows, and now I can open the tuner preview, but cant get contact, eventhough the jolt is connected to a 9V battery. whats this? EDIT: has no tried to connect pin 2 and 3 on the cable, and using hyperterminal that works, so it may be problems with java on 95?
possible to run on win95?

Shfolder.dll is from IE5
Shfolder.dll comes with Internet Explorer 5 and later, so you had pretty ancient system there. I'm using that file for SHGetFolderPath function, which gives me path to your User folder. IE5 and above create those folder, perhaps the DLL alone is not enough for proper functioning. I suggest you get the whole IE5 or above installed, as it is an update to your system and will fix plenty of issues with those early Windows 95's.
Once upon a time, perhaps as long as two years ago, I tried Java tuner on my company's Windows 98, with all the latest updates installed, and latest Java installed. I could not get it working no matter what.
What problem are you having with USB adapter? Procedure for installation of USB2Serial should be like so:
1) Install drivers.
2) Insert USB device.
Many people reverse it and somehow can't get it working properly.
What do you see in the device manager after you plug the USB device? What do you see under ports section, and under unknown devices section?

Hi, thanks for your answere.
Hi, thanks for your answere. It understands that it has the usb adapter connected and its marked as COM1 in the device manager, however it wont echo the C in hyperterminal....
Do this, meticulously, and in the order mentioned.
Well then let's follow this step by step, just in case:
1) Open hyper terminal
2) It asks you for a name, type in something press OK
3) On the next page it asks for "Connect using..." Select COM1 and press OK
4) On the next page we will setup the port:
4800
8
None
1
None
Now you have Hyperterminal ready. You should have Megajolt already connected, if not, cut power to it and connect it, then power it up. Engage CAPS LOCK and press C, then S. You should receive some data back.
If not; connect your laptop to your computer using that serial cable, setup hyperterminal on your laptop too, using identical settings, and press some letters on one of the terminals. On the other terminal you should see those letters arriving. If that does not happen, you have a) bad serial cable, b) bad or misconfigured serial port. As far as cable goes I got mine off of eBay, 50 ft for 15 bucks, way too long.
So, your serial ports work fine, you get letters sending from terminal on your laptop to your computer, or vice versa. Download and install MJCMSIM on one of your computers. Set it up by choosing proper serial port (to which the cable is connected) and pressing the start button. After that go to your other computer and connect one of the tuners. Provided that you have proper serial port settings, tuners should work, Java tuner may complain about 10000 rpms, in which case you'd just load a map into MJCMSIM that does not mention 10000 rpms anywhere.
If so far you followed all the steps above, and arrived here, and tuners work ok, then your Megajolt box is bad in some way. If tuners don't work, that means something is wrong with your computer and laptop, perhaps they're not up to date, something. If not hard, reinstalling OS on the laptop and all the latest updates will be a good choice.

In case you come up to conclusion that one of your serial ports is bad, the USB one. You'd go to device manage, right click that port, select Not at this time and click Next, then (Advanced) and next, then don't search and next, then have disk and browse to the proper driver. All this with USB2Serial adapter plugged in.

Definately let us know how it goes.

feel stupid here, but it was
feel stupid here, but it was as simple as a power supply problem. problem now solved!(digs a big hole in the ground and jumps down into it:))
95% of the time silly is the case
Most of the time the problem is very silly. I worked as a mechanic, and in IT as a field tech, and it's always something silly that people over look. They never teach you that though.
Here here!!!
Here here!!!
...and maybe a minor firmware upgrade that sends some sort of ASCII startup/welcome message out on the serial port when the unit is powered up so that comms errors might be a bit easier to trace (ie just keep playing with your PC/port/lead configs etc and keep powering up the Megajolt until you see the startup message)??
