Wont Start

Post by GRUSKS »

Today was the big day to see if my zetec starts.

Ive no spark. As far as i know everything is connected correctly. The MJ had been mapped (i think ) but no spark

Any idea where and what to check.

Thanks

Spence

Disconnect the MJLJ

Post by MartinM »

Disconnect the MJLJ completely (take out the molex connector and/or put the unit on the bench) and leave it out - we need to get the engine running on EDIS "limp-home" mode which is a fixed 10BTDC timing. The engine will start and run, it just won't rev properly or pull very well.

Taking the MJLJ out verifies that your EDIS install is correct and simplifies doing that.

Have you checked the simple things...
...EDIS has +12V on the right pins even during cranking
...EDIS is earthed at the appropriate pins

Have a look at http://picasso.org/mjlj/?q=node/734 and verify the voltages are approximately what it says.

Have you got access to an oscilloscope? If so, we could do some real fault finding!

Report back ...

Martin, i disconnected the MJ unit and i have a spark, but it wont start just backfiring with smoke out the exhaust and carbs. (mad me jump)

If i plug in the mj i still get a spark but wont start but also no back firing.

So it looks like it EDIS side no MJ. Ive tried another EDIS and Crank sensor just a big bag still.

Try swapping the coil A/coil

Post by MartinM »

Try swapping the coil A/coil B primary wires over ie the wires that go to EDIS pins 10 and 12

A spark and big backfiring was what my install did first time - as I'd got the sensor/missing tooth/TDC combination out by 180 degrees - and swapping the coil primaries sorted it out. And I never changed it afterwards!

Yep you got it, Pin 10 & 12

Yep you got it, Pin 10 & 12 on the EDIS the wrong way round. And it runs with the MJ Unit plugged in which was nice, won't let me rev the engine though, soon as i touch the throttle it dies.

Take the MJLJ off again - I know it's exciting to have it in the circuit, but you need to keep things simple and get it going on EDIS only!

What timing are you measuring with the EDIS only at idle? Should be rock solid 10 degrees BTDC.

Whats' the idle speed?

You should be able to rev the engine fairly high (at least 3000rpm), so when you touch the throttle does the timing, measured with a strobe, change before it dies? It shouldn't change at all (and it shouldn't die)

Any chance it's a fuelling problem? Is it a completely rebuilt engine i.e. is this the first time running? Carbs or injection?

Unlikely to be the EDIS, but those could be famous last words....

Post by GRUSKS »

Ill have to get a new strobe, lent mine to a mate and he moved away. The engine is a complete rebuild, never been run before. If i bring the revs up very slowly it spits out no.3 carbs then dies.

The carbs are from Bogg Brother and are Yamaha R1 carbs, been told that these were set up ready to go.

R1 fuel pump.

Ill borrow a strobe and check it all over the week

Thanks for your help martin

You was right a fuelling

Post by GRUSKS »

You was right a fuelling problem, i had 2 jerry cans of fuel in my garage for cleaning parts, which i put in the car, i forgot that one was diesel. ooooppppssss.

I drained out the old, put new fresh fuel in, clean out the filters and it runs fine. I measure the timing a spot on 10 btdc. It ticks over a bit fast, ive connected a rev counter to pin 11 on the edis unit, but no reading (brand new rev counter).

Cheers for all your help.
