also i dont really know much about the 'firmware' what is this? is this like the operating software for the unit?? should i update all the software i use for the setup?? how do i go about doing this??
sorry about all the questions but i dont like playing about with things like this unless i know alot about it

The best mapping is from a reputable rolling road, the second best is DIY.
The basic rules are that advance increases:
- as rpm increases
- as load decreases (ie throttle closes, or MAP gets closer to vacuum)
In simple terms you generally want as much advance as possible without pinking, but in some engines it's difficult/impossible to hear.
So what fuel system and what MJLJ (TPS or MAP) do you run?
Diagnosing stuttering via the Internet is a tough call, but it could suggest more of a fuelling problem than an ignition problem, unless your ignition map is way out. If your map is from a car that runs well, and is in a similar state of tune, then that might point the finger at fuelling as well.
When you look at the timing with a light does it change smoothly as rpm changes and, as far as you can tell, in accordance with the map in the MJLJ?
Yes, the firmware is similar to the operating system in the MJLJ, What version are you running now? The latest is V3.2.1 and full instructions for upgrading are at:
