different Coilpacks????

Hi Guys,

after building an EFI Turbo MGB for a friend I figured I should modernize my car as well

I am converting my MG Midget and a mates MGB to MJLJ.
Unfortunately in Oz there are no readily available supplies of EDIS parts.

I have aquired 2 EDIS4 modules and VR sensors with one Ford coil.
I have fabricated a trigger wheel and I'm now looking to use some locally available parts.

As we race these cars in areas with no EDIS parts sources, I want to use OZ market sensors and coils.
The reason is that they will be cheaper and we can buy replacements at the local parts shop if need be.

The VR sensor from a Ford Falcon appears to be of similar electrical design and is used with a small 36-1 trigger wheel on the Falcon.
Suitable Coils are harder to come by.

I have found a nice looking coil from a GM engine in a Daewoo. Unfortunately these have a 4 wire connector and don't measure out the same as the ford unit.

Has anyone used a different coilpack?
Can anyone give me info on the Daewoo 8004?? coil pack? (pic is of similar item)

If yours has 4 pins, the common pin (equivalent to the center pin on the ford coil pack) might've been separated into two, resulting in a pair of wires for driving each coil. Some Mitsubishi coil packs are made this way.

The other possibility is that your coil pack might have an igniter built in, which changes how it's triggered, and makes it definitely incompatible with the EDIS module!

In any case, a variety of 'standard' coil packs will work with the EDIS module- search the auto salvage yards for mid 90's era 4 cylinders and you're bound to find one. Remember, you're looking for about .5 ohms on primary and 11-15K ohms on the secondary.

Thanks Brent,

The daewoo coil above does have an ignitor built in....

I have found some standard coils used in GM DIS systems
Upon measuring they are around .4Ohms on the primary and 6.4K Ohms on the secondary.

Pros are no special plugs required just a male spade connector, really cheap, readily available.

My mates use these with Motec M4 EMS.

Would they work with the EDIS?
