I think you would be better off fitting a thermostat no matter what on a road car. If you have too much advance then the engine will also be running hotter.

Are you running an interior heater?? and you haven't just attached a hose from the heater valve (from the cylinder head) to the bottom hose and have the heater valve open??? as this would short circuit the radiator causing it to over heat quickly (I did this :oops: )

High KPa at idle could be a vacuum leak somewhere. I would spend some cash and get it rolling roaded by someone who knows minis personally.

Further question...

Just after some clarification about manifold vacuum pressures.

Ignition off the reading is showing as 101 KPa. (assuming atmospheric pressure)
At engine idle it is between 65 and 70 KPa
When revving under no load with wide open throttle the KPa figure drops to about 30 to 35. (i.e. higher vacuum as the throttle is fully opened)


Are these numbers plausable?
After opinions incase i am being a retard!

Car is running pretty well now just a few final timing niggles. Overheating sorted also.
Turned out to be a worn carb causing the earlier running problems. (dash pot piston)
