ok i think i have found the problem. my laptop wont reconize the usb to db9 cable, when i plug it in notting comes up on the screen, my laptop is a dell studio 1735, windows vista

If you plug in your USB to serial adapter, does it show up as a new COM port under Device Manager? this is what you'll want to look for.

it does on my home computer but i cant get it to connect to my laptop.

If your laptop doesn't recognize the usb to serial adapter you should try re-installing the drivers that came with the adapter.

ok i found out i got a faulty cable so i exchanged it for a new one now it works,

when i connect to the ecu it says something like "runtime no cylinder count" down at the bottom of the srceen?

i think i will need to find a better usb cable, when i open up the megajolt programe it says "could not open port" so when i plug in my usb cable and install the driver then open up the megajolt programe it says "timeout cylinder count" the message is the same even when the other end of the cable is not connected to the ecu so it must be the usb cable i have :(

Are you certain the Megajolt Configuration software is set to use the same COM port as the USB->Serial adapter? You can check this in Device Manager.

For example, if your USB to serial adapter is set to COM11, you will want to make sure COM11 is selected in the Megajolt Configuration Software.

ya i checked in the device manager and it said com5 so i set it to com5 in megajolt and it still wouldnt work.

Is it possible, that you may be able to change COM port settings in your BIOS?
