interesting
just read the other thread, David, where did you get your axim pug from that you used to make up your lead? i tried the pocket tuning software on my new axim x50v, looks good! as soon as i can sort a lead out i can play with it on my car, ( done well over 10 000 mjlj miles) i would love a definitive answer about the serial voltages though!, i notice you can buy serial adapter cables for the axim in the USA, but not here in the UK :-/hmm what to do,,,,,
Dell Connector
Josh, David has the ipaq, I've got the Dell. I got my connector at gomadic.com:

It is a bear to solder up because the connection pins are so tiny. When I did mine, serial cables for the x50v were in short supply and expensive, so I built my own for about $10 total. I agree it would be nice to know if the straight serial signal would fry the Axim but Dell service wouldn't confirm so I wasn't going to risk it. It wasn't that difficult to add the 3 wire 3.5mm stereo head phone jack to the box. On the plus side it makes it real easy to hook up the Axim to it when compared to a DB9 port. I think I will find the stereo jack even nice when the MJLJ is up behind the dash in my Sprite when it's all said and done.

well i'm going to be bold
well i'm going to be bold here and say that the serial port of the dell will work with the mjlj!!
I am sure problems will only occur if you solder the cable up with the wires in the wrong places etc.... just take your time double checking as you go (same with anything really).
By the way, I bought my cable from ebay (just a 'buy it now' shop). Unfortunately, the cable will not be straight through, which is what we need for mjlj; so you'll almost certainly have to cut the cable in half and swap the serial TX/RX wires so that TX goes to TX and RX goes to RX. Remember only three wires are actually needed for serial comms to the mjlj; ground, TX and RX.
Also it is handy to know, (as Jack already pointed out) that soldering the pins on these tiny connectors is a real pain, so you'll be best off cutting the cable in the middle, then joining wires together rather than trying to resolder the pins at either end.
Let me know when you've got it going, believe me it's worth it!

quick ppc software Q
how do you change the cylinder number on your software David? i cant get it to change from the default 0 cylinders
PS. i think your right about the serial on the axim, i help tune several peoples mjlj cars so fitting a special input for my pda would be a bit of a pain...

unfortunately i have never
unfortunately i have never got round to properly implenting that josh; all it tells you is how many cylinders your engine has (when connected to the mjlj!). you can't change the no. of cylinders yet.
very useful if you forget what engine is in your car of course

i
i wasnt sure whether the cylinder configuration would alter how the mjlj talked to the edis, with brents software you change it to correspond with the edis module your using. will your software be ok with 6 or 8 cylinder edis modules as well as the 4?
yes it should be fine, all
yes it should be fine, all that'll happen is that the 'number of cylinders' box will tell you that you have 6 or 8 cylinders.... if you need to actually change the number of cyls, you'll have to connect up to your desktop, but as you should only need to do this once (unless you do a engine transplant!?) it's not too much of a problem
hi josh, again, it's another
hi josh, again, it's another of those things i don't think i'll get round to... theoretically you shouldn't have to change your rev limit that often so I didn't bother doing it!
i may have a look at doing
i may have a look at doing the rest of the features this week, will post on here if i get chance to do them... i've just been sidetracked writing injection programs for megasquirt too!
sorry, i haven't found time
sorry, i haven't found time this week, i guess it'll get done eventually....
