Initial Set Up.

Post by bobyspit »

Help required please.
I am nearly there and I am trying to get my head around the initial set up of the Edis / Megajolt set up.
My engine is a 1.3, firing order 1-3-4-2. I as instructed will set the Trigger Wheel on the crank pulley wheel with the missing tooth at TDC, and the Crank sensor at 90 degrees BTDC.
The engine will be set a TDC and connected up.
This is were I am getting confused! How do I set the Megajolt up so it knows where the engine is in respect to the firing order, theory would say it could think it was on any one of 4 revolutions, the old (suck, squeeze, bang, blow.) I have scoured through the instructions I downloaded and cannot find anything to help me.
Any help greatly appreciated.

Ey up Rob, just connect 1-2-3-4 from the coil pack to plugs 1-2-3-4, when the missing tooth is at tdc that will be the no.1 plug firing if the no1 piston is at the top of the cylinder,, does that help any,, :-)

Hi, your engine is 4-stroke = 2 revolutions between the firing stroke on any one cylinder. Cylinders 1 & 4 will be at TDC together (one at the end of the compression stroke, the other at the end of the exhaust stroke), and similarly cylinders 2 & 3 will both be at 'their' TDC one half a crankshaft rotation later. The EDIS will fire cylinders 1 & 4 together* (with only one of them being at the end of its compression stroke), and 2 & 3 one half cycle later. The TDC that you set the trigger wheel/VR sensor to is actually TDC for 1 & 4, and it knows TDC for 2 & 3 is one half rotation later. Thus the EDIS 'knows' all it needs to know to fire the cylinders correctly.
(* Hence the system is called 'wasted spark' - one of each pair of sparks is always 'wasted'.)

Rich.

wthin 2 or 3 revolutions of the engine the edis is locked into what is where.

it won't do anything other than recognise RPM until it sees that missing tooth which is its instruction to fire the appropriate coil (i.e the tower asscoaited with cylinder 1 and its twin.
