Very newbie Qs

All,
Please forgive a electrical simpleton, confused.
I have searched the board for advice - please point me nicely if it is already there.
I have a ready made from Brent, MJLJ box with a wiring loom, EDIS-6 box, crank sensor, connectors etc. I'm fairly confident about the various connections to the car, setting up the crank sensor etc. but...

Testing - lots of refs to bench testing, but the advice rapidly descends into technotalk and oscillators. How can you bench test it without it being connected to the engine? Is testing just the MJLJ box, and a PC? Does a 9V battery go to the 12V connection? Do I need to do this if the Maestro made it?

Molex. The Build and Installation guide shows the Molex connections for an EDIS-4 and says that the -6 and -8 will have their own. What are they, please?

Revlimiter: The FAQ says that, "This Rev Limit output, like the other programmable outputs, is an 'open collector output', meaning it conducts 'ground' when enabled." What does this mean? I have a rev limiter that I think shorts the conventional coil when a limit is reached - it has two connections to the coil. Is this compatible with the MJLJ, and how? I'd like to keep it as I can change the rev limit without resorting to the PC and the config program (see below)

Shift light. My conventional revlimiter incoporates a shift light - it lights up when rev limitation is imminent. Does the shift light shown on the wiring diagram do the same?

12V supply. There is a capacitor shown in the 12V supply - is this included in the MJLJ box? What does a 25microfarad capacitor look like? I have a catalogue with 20 pages of capacitors - I can't find any rated for 12V, only 10 or 16V, nor at 25microfarads, only 22 and 33.

Java: I know what Java is but where/when do you use it with MJLJ? I have downloaded the MJLJ Configurator and it runs on my PC. Do I need a Java application?

Enough! Some kindly replies may clear my head, and will be received with much gratitude!

Thank you
John

cant comment on much of this, bench testing is not something i've done yet, and mine is only an edis 4.

the only thing i can help you with is what i think the extra capacitor is, as far as i know its just for electrical noise reduction, similar to what you put on a coil or alternator to stop it interfering with the radio in the car!

for the rest good luck!

John,

You've pointed out some holes in the documentation, so thanks- I will work to make that better.

I'll follow up with more detailed information, but quickly, here are a few answers:

Bench testing is only limited to supplying power to the unit (see the molex diagram on the build / installation pages) , connecting it to your serial port on your PC, and running the configuration software to verify the box is alive.

The next step is to get your EDIS running on your engine- one the EDIS can run the engine at 'limp home mode' of 10 degrees BTDC, you can wire in the MJLJ and verify that it's controlling advance with the timing light.

Java: you can ignore references to the java configuration software, it's been replaced by what you've already downloaded.

Shift light: You can set whatever RPM trigger you desire for the shift light. Look in the configuration software for the settings.

EDIS 4, 6 and 8 pinouts: I'll update the wiring diagram to include these.

Again, I'll follow up with more detail soon.

Thank you, Brent!
I'll await your additions to the site.
The power to the MJLJ box - is a 9V battery sufficient? Much easier to do than 12V as that battery is about one hundred times bigger!

Rev limiter AND a shift light! The MJLJ is even more than I thought!
Thanks again.

John,

I've updated the vehicle installation guide. It's still a work in progress but there's much information there already.
