Hello all. I am a newby, so please take it easy on me  . I have just purchased a mega jolt and was scanning the pages for all the relevent info i will need for the instilation. When i realised there was no coil igniter on the wiring diagrams. and as this is my first fortea into distributer/less ignition i am a little confused as to wether the igniter is needed and if so where to connect to. i have searched the site but couldnt seem to find any relevent info
Links or comments will be greatly appreciated.

Mik

PS. the engine and associated ignition parts are out of an australian version of the european ford mondea. 2.0L zetec 10/1998 model

Hi Mik

Welcome!

What's a coil igniter??? I googled but only found the Pertronix Ignitor kit which doesn't sound like what you mean.

Do you just mean the wasted spark coilpack that's a standard part of the EDIS component set? That's certainly on all the diagrams...

Coil Igniter on Zetec

Hello MartinM and thanks for the reply. What is a coil igniter? I an not real sure myself?. but as far as i understand it is this unit (grey box on the coil pack) see pic, it is like a secondary coil that provides a boosted voltage spike directly to the coil pack. I understand that the standard ECU cannot fire the coils directly. the box has a ford part No 93AB-12A019-AB. the igniter is wired directly into the centre pin wire of the main coil. on the right of the pic, 2 purple wires come together, then back to the ECU as one. would it be that the igniter is an aussie version of the US EDIS ??.

Hmm. Not sure what that device is for but it's not part of the EDIS system. It's certainly not a variation of the standard EDIS module- if it were it would have the necessary pin-outs (see the installation guide under the 'how-to' part of the site).

You can shed those components, keep the coil pack and then fetch the necessary remaining parts - EDIS module, crank sensor and trigger wheel to complete your installation.

I *think* it's the infamous capacitor shown on some EDIS diagrams...it just goes from +12v (centre connection on coilpack) to ground. Can you verify that with a continuity meter?

It could be seen as an "igniter" I suppose, but that's not a great (or well known) term. It will help to maintain +12v at the coil primary during ignition events and probably has some radio suppression functionality as well - but it's not a coil in it's own right.

It's generally not seen as a crucial, which is why it's missing on a lot of wiring diagrams. In the UK, it doesn't often even seem to be fitted.

If you've got it, and a nice harness connector, and you verify that one side of it connects to +12v and the other to earth, I'd leave it in situ.

Your supposition is right Martin, its the suppression capacitor, from memory it has a capacitor value stamped on it (XXXuF) - there was one on my EDIS parts from a Mondeo. Should work fine without.

Thankyou for the advise, this has answered my question. I have recently purchased an EDIS with VRS from the US so there will be no confusion during instillation (I hope). Am i correct in saying that the standard ford mondeo 36-1 grooved flywheel and sensor set up are compatable ?. Checked for continuity and is earthed through the mounting bolt and the capacitor value is 20uF. Seems like its just another another one of them parts.

Thanks heaps. Can't waite for the parts to get here !
