please excuse the daft question but i am new to this, do i need the MJLJ fitted to the car to get it to talk to the pc or can i just connect it temporarily to a 12v battery, the reason i ask is i dont have a laptop and would like to get it nearly setup before i borrow a laptop to do the final settings

just in case you need to know its a desktop pc running win xp home and connected via a usb-serial adaptor.

Sitting on the bench is fine, and it can be programmed using a fresh 9V (PP3) for power.
