RS232 Question

Hi there,

I’ve just built up my board and noticed that on the schematic drawings, that with the rs232 female connector on the board only uses pins 2, 3 which communicate with the board and pins 5, 9 go to earth.

So my question is, if I just mirror this pin connection pattern within rs232 cable everything should be a o.k.

If that’s the case I can get everything connected up and give a go.!

So, have I got it right or have I got it all wrong?

I await you expert opinions.

You've got it exactly right. It does seem such a waste with all those unused pins though, doesn't it?

Phew...! That’s a relief. Because being the impatient type I’ve already made up the cable.

Thanks for confirming things.

My only other question is, are the chips which are supplied already loaded up with the boot up info. In other words will I be up and running or do I need to upload stuff before it will work.

Sorry for sounding a bit like a novice but that’s exactly what I am. :?

Many thanks

Ted

If you buy a ready built unit from someone, or a processor that originated from Brent, then you're good to go.

If you buy a bare processor from an electronics distribution company, you will need to load the appropriate software into it - not a trivial task and not really recommended (unless you are particularly geeky and prefer the journey to being at the destination!)

Kit came form the main man Brent. Thought it fit that my money goes direct to the man who's done all hard work and development.

So I should be on to a winner!

Thanks MartinM for clarifying things.
