Newbie with map/tps question

Just registered here.
I currently have a Vauxhall 16v engine, thats being fitted with individual runners/carb's.
Megajolt will be given the task of controlling the ignition.

But should i use tps or map as the load input?
The carbs already have a tps fitted, they also have stub outlets after the butterfly(vacuum source), so i could rasily run a map sensor too

Ive read the map/tps article on the main site, but still cant come to a final conclusion. Which should i use and for what reason?
Also, whats the difference between a 2d and 3d map? Does 3d use both tps and map as an input, which with revs gives a 3d map? Or have i got that wrong?

Hello,

if you already have a TPS fitted then I would go with the TPS option as it's the simplest and least expensive route for you, and you'll be happy with the results.

However, you're probably asking here because in some cases it's not a black/white decision. Sometimes it comes down to personal preference, or what they think they might do with the engine in the future.

For example, one may go MAP if they plan to turbo charge with blow-through carbs or independent throttle bodies, or if they really want to measure load based on how the engine is breathing. On the other hand, they may stick with TPS if they plan on running race-oriented cams in the future.

3D map:

This means the ignition advance is determined based on RPM (X axis), load (MAP or TPS) (Y axis) and the ignition advance (Z axis) set in the firmware.

Note. the load axis is MAP *or* TPS- not both at the same time.

Running a 2D map means your load axis is fixed, so you will only vary ignition advance based on RPM and the ignition advance configured in the firmware.

So in summary: In your case I would recommend you use your TPS sensor to measure load - you'll be happy with the results.

Think i'll stick with TPS then.


Do all MJ's use 3d maps then? Or can you choose?
I assume 3'd gives better results.

Glad we could help!

The MJLJ is, by design, a '3D' system, but you could force 2D behavior by fixing the load axis to all the same values. 99% of users will use the full 3D capability.

After installation, be sure to calibrate your TPS- also covered in the operation guide.

Just looking at the articles page, the hard rev limiter, are they still in a testing stage? Or are they available to buy?
As its quite a handy think to have.
