Ive looked around and havent quite found what im looking for yet, so im gunna just ask...


What is the Easyest way into having a Coil on plug setup for a 8cyl engine, basicly the least wireing, tricks, trouble shooting possable, closest to plug and play.
I reaslze there is prolly not a complete plug an play system out there or willing to accept that atlast.

Are there any gurus around here building setups to spec for people like ive seen for the megasquirt? or are there any other similar systems that can can do what im looking for.

just trying to maximize my play to beating my head aginst the wall ratio.

Welcome. To help you more, I'd like to know your motivation for coil on plug. Is it for performance, or is it for cosmetic/packaging issues?

If it's for performance, lets explore that further. What's the max RPM you will be seeing?

A wasted spark system on a V8 divides the spark generating duties across 4 coil packs, instead of just 1 coil, as with a distributor based setup. So, your coil packs will be firing only 1/4 as often.

As you know, a big component of spark energy is dwell time. Let's say your running at 7000 RPM: here you have 8.5ms per revolution. In a wasted spark setup you get a little less than half of that in dwell time. Say, 4 ms. Typical optimal dwell time is about 5-6 ms. As you can see, you get almost all of your possible spark energy at high RPMs, with a wasted spark system!

Coil on plug setups really shine in ultra-high RPM applications, such as on sport bike engines.

Now, if you are interested in clean packaging, and the potential elimination of HV plug wires, you can build a wasted-spark coil on plug configuration using dual EDIS modules driven by one Megajolt V4.

Having said all that, our upcoming Megajolt2 will have discrete coil drivers with the ability to expand to additional drivers. I will be providing an update on that very soon (haven't I said that already? ), but first I am readying another exciting announcement.
