That is an excellent idea- we're planning iphone and android front ends, tethered with bluetooth for our future projects. Certainly beats trying to make our own displays/ controllers!

The easiest way to do this would be with wifi.
If you had some sort of Rs232 connector that made its own wifi network that you could connect to via a portable device. Then point that device to an address through the internet browser on the phone.
Just like this system...

That's what we need! RS232 to wifi network :s
Can it be done?
Food for thought.

It seems a similar thing already exists!

So, next all we need is the apropriate software for the iPhone! Of course, it would have to be for a jailbroken iPhone.
There is no reason why this can't be done. All we need is someone who knows about iphone software and shares an interest in cars!

or get a *real* phone that doesnt place such stupid limitations on what you are *allowed* to do with it !
(sorry, couldnt resist - i hate hardware that you have to pay for the right to just *use*, and the makers dont think you actually *own* it).
I'd be interested in assisting with such a widget for an android phone, but not an apple.

We're planning bluetooth based tuning software for our projects for both android (i have) and iPhone. Not as familiar with iphone development. So is it not possible to write apps for an iphone that communicate over bluetooth??

iPhone blutooth is very limited. You can't even share photos via Bluetooth as standard.
Of course, anything is possible with a jailbroken iPhone.
Bluetooth is a very good idea for both MJ and racecapture though as most new laptops now have built in Bluetooth. So downloading data from racecapture would be a breeze in the pits without having to fumble with connectors!

Don't suppose you have any plans to create an "App" for Windows Mobile?

Since I have a Moto Droid... first version will be for that platform. Next, iphone, but some disturbing reports of handicapped / severely limited bluetooth capabilities in the iPhone? Haven't researched it yet, but I would need to have the equivalent of a serial connection... For windows mobile, don't know. perhaps if I had a device to work with.

A quick check:

iPhone doesn't support bluetooth serial port profile (SPP). Very very lame.
Apple and their iPhone remind me of this song:

Edit: A jailbroken phone, yes: you could do this..

Hmm, can't help you out there with a WinMo device.. haven't actually got mine yet, and when I do I'll be using it!
There is an "emulator" for the PC though, which could be of help!

Also, I've seen a link to "Pocket Spark" which was for PDA's - would this run on WinMo? And if so, does anyone have it still because the linked site has gone?

If you haven't purchased your phone yet... by *all means* get an android device. The Moto droid is simply amazing!!

Using WiFi might be a better idea..
As long as you code the interface in straight http, almsot ANY phone would interface OK, as well as most laptops etc.
I use Nokia phones w/ symbian O/S (#1 in the world.... except for US, but slipping a bit now that Android has hit), and there's quite an application development community for them.. as long as no funky formatting / java / flash stuff is used, http is nice!
Uh oh.....

So, I guess my iPad is out....lol. Too bad cause it is a powerhouse when compared to a phone. I do have wi fi as well as Bluetooth and 3G. The usb adapter for a camera looks to be handiest. It has possibilities......

I've been away for a while (the MJ is so damn reliable - shame about the rest of the car!) so sorry if I missed it somewhere else on the forum, but has there been any movement on this? Reading above the wifi solution looks good to me, but doesn't that mean display only? I guess with bluetooth/serial it might even be possible to change settings from the phone?
edited: If my iPhone needs jailbreaking to make bluetooth/serial then so beit - nothing other than this would tempt me to do it though!
