IMHO, any converter involving the USB port on your laptop stands a good chance of being a big headache. if you laptop has a PCMCIA (older) or Express Card (newer) slot, buy a card with the appropriate socket on it eg DB9, and use that. they always work. you will find hidden on this site, plenty of posts expressing frustration with DB9 - serial converters which just dont work.

When I bought mine, there was a RJ11 to RS232 adapter delivered with. You can buy them separately in any electronic's shops, the wiring is available in the manual. From there you go to the serial to USB converter. Worked fine for me. Be sure to buy a converter with the FTDI-chip.
Cheers.

Thanks for keeping us updated.
Tell us what brand and model and if it works.

@brent
Maybe time to edit a "sticky" thread with the converters that work/don't work. This is quite a recurring problem and lots of people seem to run into the trap. I suggest a sticky post on top of one of the forum sections indicating brand and model of the converter and the operating system it runs with.

Cheers.
