I want to build a V3 from "scratch"...

Hello folks,
First post here!
Electronics is a huge hobby of mine and that's the main reason I want to build a megajolt system to fire up an old engine that I have lying around I absolutely love the idea of making my own ECU!
Therefore, I don't really want to buy a preassembled kit, I'd rather etch my own board, and I can populate most of it from parts I already have. I have a few questions though!
V3 looks like the most cost effective and easiest version as it does away with (almost) all of the discrete transistors, without going surface mount. However, there doesn't seem to be any V3 firmware around anywhere, does the V4 firmware work OK on the V3 design? I don't see why it wouldn't but good to check!
Is there a single layer layout of the V3 board floating around anywhere?
For programming the V4 design I guess it's necessary to knock up a DB9 to RJ45 cable?
MC68HC908QY4MPE should be fine for the processor right?
Many thanks!
