hello all,
I dont know if its just me but alot of tacho's i try with MjLj just dont work even with the diode circuit and the voltage reducing add on to the diode circuit, Smiths tachs dont work, VDO tachs dont work, is it that there is not enough amps to drive these older tachs or that the waveform is wrong, or both, or something else? I think you clever chaps that frequent this forum could come up with a definative solution?
cheers, Josh

If someone sends me an tach that's representative of the type that doesn't work I'll do my best to come up with an adapter circuit that would be compatible with it.
3 approaches to interfacing to the tach:
- EDIS IDM output
- MJLJ Tach output
- Diode adapter circuit for coil packs.
For some tachs an adapter might need to be made that's similar to the MSD tach adapter- I belive that system uses a coil to simulate the flyback conditions of a regular coil firing.

older Smiths Tachs etc not working Solution Found :-)
i sorted it, i made a little circuit up and just tested it, i tried a smiths tach and a vdo tach and they both work fine! if anyone is interested i will sort out a circuit diagram, it basicly converts the MjLj RPM output into a signal older tachs can use
