could not open port

I am new to using megajolt and am having problems connecting to the computer, I always have a could not open port message on the configurator screen. I have a gigawire serial to usb adapter with windows 7 compatibility software and I use the tools tab to match the com port that I use on my computer to the configurator. does anyone know what I could do to fix this?
