I haven't actually bought one yet - the project has been delayed a bit, but hopefully will be completed in 2009. I am fairly sure it's the correct part though, so I should probably get one anyway. From Dataspares reply to my email, back in 2006: As to the connector you are looking for C312 the price...

FTDI COM Port
Don't know if this is the problem you have, but it may be of interest. The following information has recently appeared on the FTDI website. It seems that some devices default to not having the virtual com port enabled. NOTE: If an extra COM port is not available after installing the latest CDM drive...

VRSSIM
btw, using VRSSIM on a P3/550 the limit seems to be about 5000 where MJLJ loses the signal. That would be a combination of too slow a PC and the rather basic VRSSIM interface circuit. That's interesting. My EDIS 4 seems to work ok up to about 8000 RPM using a 100MHz pentium, so I would have expecte...

configurator tacho display
I think I remember seeing this effect with the old Java configurator, so it could be a 'feature' of the MJLJ firmware. Maybe the RPM value is not updated when there is no PIP signal from the EDIS?

Removing MAX232
Yes, sounds like the fault is with the MAX232. You can often de-solder chips and re-use them if you have a de-soldering pump like <A HREF="http://uk.farnell.com/jsp/endecaSearch/partDetail.jsp?SKU=3125634">this</A>. Depends how big the holes in the PCB are though - on PTH boards the solder...

Loopback test
Sounds like your capacitors are ok, and probably not polarised. If they were polarised they would have a stripe or '+' symbol to indicate the polarity. As Conrad said, next thing to try is a loopback test. 1) Test your PC serial port using a terminal program. For hyperterminal you need to make sure ...

Capacitors
Your capacitors should work ok. If they are polarised it would be worth checking that they are all the correct way round.
You can check if the charge pump circuit is working by measuring the voltage at pins 2 and 6 of the MAX232. You should measure approx +10V on pin 2 and -10V on pin 6.

Rev Limiter
I am also interested in the hard rev limiter. I set up a test bench to look in to this, intending to make something, but haven't really been able to spend any time on it. Since I don't have my system installed in the car yet, others are probably better able to test your solution. I will certainly be...

Should be ok
If it is a 2.0 Zetec it should work correctly. The required 36-1 pattern is part of the flywheel. AFAIK you just need to connect to the existing sensor.

USB - Serial
You must use a serial port, so you need to get a USB to Serial converter. They are not very expensive and should be fairly simple to set up. If you have any difficulty search the forum - there are a few threads on this topic.

Display problems
Hi Brent I think the new configurator software looks great, so many thanks for all your work. I can confirm that it installs and runs on windows 98, though have not yet tested communication with the MJLJ itself. I've spotted a couple of minor display glitches though: 1) On my windown 98 machine, if ...

My MJLJ is still not installed in a car yet, but I have bench tested it and it all looks good. Have tested the communication with the PC and programmed in a few test maps. Also checked operation with the full EDIS system, and can see the advance change on an oscilloscope when moving around the map u...

Phasing of SAW and PIP
From what I have read, it seems that the absolute phasing of SAW relative to PIP is not critical, but there are certain times when SAW can't be transmitted. See <A HREF="http://www.dainst.com/info/edis/edis.html">http://www.dainst.com/info/edis/edis.html</a>, in particular this bit: <I>The...
