No Spark, No Nothing - Please Help!

Post by ChrisH »

Hi all, I'm seriously confused at current as to why my EDIS setup won't work at all, no sign of a spark not even without MegaJolt attached in 'Limp Home' mode.

The wiring all looks good to me though if anyone knows of any common mistakes (other than swapping the sensor wires around which I've tried to no joy) I'd like to hear them.
I've tried to check there's power in all the right places, the EDIS module and coil pack certainly receives 12v with ignition and starter.
I've used a good quality screened cable for all my connections.
The sensor is pretty well mounted and is only about 1mm away from the sensor wheel.
I've also tried it with the MegaJolt connected.
And though I can’t guarantee there sound components all the parts were sourced from a fairly tidy Ford Orion (’94ish).

So I'm honestly completely stuck and a little frustrated. Any help and suggestions would be so appreciated. Is there any way to test the various components, I'd particularly like to test the sensor for correct operation? I have a reasonable digital multi-meter but no luxuries like an oscilloscope. Please Help!!!

Have you got the sensor connections the same way around as on the original installation?I think the signal polarity needs to be correct for the Edis.

Sensor Diagram?

Post by ChrisH »

Thanks for the reply Paul,

I have tried it with the sensor connected both ways around but with no luck.

Is there a diagram anywhere (or better an annotated photo) that shows how the sensor should be connected?

Most of the sensors I have seen have the connections 'dipping' away from the main sensor 'shaft'. Looking at the sensor connections end-on with the end dipping down from the main shaft (i.e. if the shaft was held horizontal the end connections would be pointing towards the floor) which connection is positive and which is negative (left|right)?

Any comments on this or other suggestions would be really welcome!

Thanks,

Chris

If you have a decent digital volt meter you may be able to hook to the pickup output and see if it is working at all. You should see atleast .5 volts generated during cranking. probably more. If I have a chance I will check mine this way and post results so you can compare.

Thanks Todd,

Any information on testing you could provide would be great. The multimeter I have is pretty reasonable so hopefully it will show something.

OK, I checked mine and this is what I got. With the EDIS module dissconnected and checking from that end I got 1.1 volts AC (not DC!). This fluctuated between 1.0 volts and 1.1 volts at cranking speed. Nothing in DC mode. I used a Fluke 78 DMM. It has a fairly fast sample rate but most DMM's should average well. Hope this helps.

Finally - Success!!!

Post by ChrisH »

Hi all,

I finally got the system working today! After testing the coil with an old distributer and checking the signals comming from the sensor to confirm they worked, all I was left with was the EDIS module itself.

Replaced it and it worked first time! It's just my luck that I should have got what's probably one bad module in thousands.

Anyway, thanks for the suggestions, just need to get things in tune now.

Chris
