COM ports in use

Post by snapperpaul »

My USB serial adaptor is connected to COM Port 13, all other ports are in use, configurator only allows com ports upto 10
What do i do to solve this one?

Is it on a laptop?

On mine there are 4 USB ports on the side, three are below #10, one above. You must be able to swap stuff around a bit so you can use a lower one for Megajolt.

Depending on the device, you can usually reassign the COM port numbers by going into the device properties in the windows "device manager"

Right click my computer icon (not a desktop shortcut to my computer), properties, then the hardware tab, then the device manager button). Expand the "ports" subsection of the tree, and check the properties tabs of the various com ports. look for combo boxes where you can change the port assignment.

Bluetooth devices usually seem to munch up a lot of virtual serial ports that can be either disabled (if not using lots of bluetooth devices), or set to higher port numbers leaving the lower ones free for "real" ports.

Alternatively, you can get into the the computers BIOS (Usually Del or F2 at bootup) and disable the on-board COM ports or modem, which will free up Com1 or Com2 to set your external port to.

If you need more detail on this proceedure, I can arrange some screen shots.
