First installation attempt on a VW Type 1
Hi there,
I've finally did my trial installation on a VW flat4 aircooled engine, I just got two backfires: one from the carb and one from the exaust then the old battery died... it might be all wired correctly and the backfires the result of a very rough toothwheel positioning... but, just to be sure, how should I have to hook the spark plugs to the EDIS coils knowing that the VW firing order is 1-4-3-2?
What I shouls see in the real time monitor duning cranking? I had sparks and communication but RPM stayed 0 all the time, is it ok?
Next time I'll bring a Hall sensor with me to test in place of the (ABS) VR I'm using and an O'scope.

Ok I had the confermation 1-3 4-2 are the correct pair.

Ouch... I've installed and po
Ouch... I've installed and positioned the pulley just by memory, now I've read the instructions again and I understood i've made a BIG mistake: The missig tooth is now 90° BTDC and the sensor is at TDC but I had to fit the sensor 90° BTDC with the missig tooth at TDC!
Now I understand the backfire.
Unfortunately I cannot try again until next week. Shame on me, I didn't RTFM.

Sad news, second attempt fail
Sad news, second attempt failed. At this pont i don't know if it was because the engine was flodded or something else.
Still what I can get it's just backfires.

What did you change so far? Did you swap the #3 and 4 wires? Did you reorient your pickup? I don't think you would actually have to move the pickup if you just move the plug wires. They wont match the numbers on the coil but 3 and 4 wouldn't anyway. I can't quite wrap my mind around the timing of the whole thing but I think if you move the wires on the coil "back" one spot in the firing order this should work.

The pickup is still there, I've just turned the triggerwheel 180°. With engine at TDC (engine turns clockwise) the missing tooth is now 90° past the sensor.
One thing I'm not sure is the sensor itself, it comes from an ABS system. I never tested it it may not work or simply not be a VR.
I'll try to set up the system on the bench before doing anything else.

I've built a test bench and it seems that the problem is the sensor, I cant get a reliable spark below 1000 rpm.

Not sure if you saw one of my
Not sure if you saw one of my previous post but I tested my sensor (stock Escort) and had an out put of 1.0-1.1 Volts AC on a DMM. This was during cranking. As far as I know all ABS sensors are of the reluctor type and "should" work if the out put is high enough. Hope this helps.

yesterday's night i did some testing. I've scoped the ABS sensor's signal and i found it's only 400mV peak to peak.
The amlpitude increase a little bit with speed but no more than 100mv, I've tried also to place the sensor's tip as close as possible to the thooted wheel and change the sensor's orientation in respect to the theeths but the amplitude was always that low.
I bet the problem is the signal amplitude at cranking speed. As you said the sensor is VR type but the output isn't high enough.
Then I decided to try another EDIS module I have around for spare, now... with the second module the spark is stable also at low RPMs.
I don't think there is anithing wrong with the module I've used before, the latter probably has a little more sensitivity.
I'll try again on the engine soon, in the meantime I'll try to fabricate a sensor bracket to keep it firmly in place. While looking for a new sensor.

I saw it, that's an interesting post. I think someone should take the time to put all the EDIS information in one single page or website at least.
However I'm in Itlay, I've a FORD dealer next to me. Do you think this codes will work also with them?
I think I'll give it a try tomorrow morning, I'll carry a sensor picture with me, that should be a pretty common sparepart also for the last shop guy on the planet.

VR sensors
Those are Standard Motor Products part numbers, not Ford. The European affiliate is www.intermotor.co.uk, although their website doesn't work properly. You may still want to go to an independant autoparts supplier and see if he can cross reference the SMP part numbers.

I went this morning at the Ford dealer, I had to draw the sensor on a peice of paper... but then the guy said "ah! the flywheel sensor!".
