Everything has been great for 5 months.... until this

Post by rickybmw320i »

So, Today I had a car control clinic in the bay area. After the first round of the car control thing, My car started to feel bogged down (bmw with an inline 6 and triple webers). I pulled it in the pits and checked everything out. At first I thought it was my carbs acting up but it was not. I am getting no spark from the coil on i believe "a". Basically if you holding the coil plug (plug for the wires that go to brain) up, the set of coils on the far left. Which is my cylinder 1 and 6. I checked voltage and wiring for everything. It seems, the “yellow with black line wire” which would correspond to “a” or far left on the coil pack is not getting 12v at the brain. But is at the coil pack. But, that coil is not working.

So, I went and got a new coil pack and figured that was the problem. No, It was not. I am still only running on 4 cylinders. Does anybody have any idears? I have had this set up for a long time with no problems and this comes out of nowhere. Could it be the MJLJ box?

greatly appreciated,
Rick

Hi Rick,

I'll assume when you say 'the brain' you mean the Ford EDIS-6 module. Interpreting your diagnostic description, it seems that when the ignition is 'on' you are measuring 12V at the 'A' terminal of the coil pack. But, at the EDIS module, you do not measure the same 12V on pin 10 of the EDIS plug. Correct?

Wiring diagram for reference:

If correct, you may want to check the wire between the EDIS-6 and coil pack for any breaks or bad connections. You can also set your volt/ohm meter to 'continuity' mode and check continuity for the A,B and C coil drive wires.

To answer your other question: No- the MJLJ would not be responsible for this problem- this problem is only between the EDIS-6 and the coil packs.

There's also an outside chance the EDIS-6 is bad, but I would bet a bad wire/connection.

Let us know what you find out!

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly.

Yes, by brain I mean the EDIS-6 module. Glad you understood. Sometime this week I will try to look over all of the wiring again. I went over everything about 2 times today completely puzzled. If I still do not find any breaks or anything, I will locate a new module and try that. If that does not work, Then I guess I will try to rewire everything.

A couple questions...

can a bad ground cause one coil not to work?
Could the VR sensor cause any of this?
Have you seen this problem before and if so, what was the outcome?

thanks!

Well, I figured it out. It was a bad wire in the harness. I have no idea how that is possible but it happened. Thanks
