None communication with megajolt.

Post by Fitzie »

I have purchased a megajolt lite jr v3 and have installed in a westfield as per on line instructions.Have tried 3 different laptops using serial ports and usb/serial adaptor (purchased in uk from trigger wheels) and cannot get communication. Ive had the serial lead tested by triggerwheels and its said to be fault free. Have had the services of an I.T. guy local to me and after a few hours of swearing and cursing have come to the conclusion that the unit itself is faulty.Or maybe someone on here can point me in the right direction to get it up and running

Hi,

An alternate way to identify if the unit is basically 'functional' is if the unit can control ignition advance on a running engine. Are you able to connect it to an engine running with the EDIS module? If so, monitor the ignition advance using a timing light while varying RPM. See if you can observe the ignition advance change.

If the unit appears to control ignition timing, then it seems to be alive. In this case it likely points to a fault between the unit's serial port and the MJLJ processor. First check solder joints around the MAX232A and it's companion set of capacitors (refer to the schematics for this); if all looks good, replace the MAX232A chip.

Hi Brent. I purchased the MJLjr from Triggerwheels here in the UK already built ready to install. They are testing the unit this weekend and will let me know the results Monday.
I am assuming everything will be ok when I get it back, but will keep you informed.

The quick update is both serial cable and ECU have now been tested and connect fine on the testbench. We're now collectively scratching our heads but best guess is that there's perhaps a software mismatch somewhere along the line. 4.0.2 firmware is on the system and I've sent over a new CD with 4.0.2 software on it. Fingers crossed that's all it is.

Thanks for the update. Fitzie indicates in his post that it's a V3- Is it indeed a V4?

It is indeed a V4. I think the confusion may arise because the supplied software CD had V3 written on it. This may be just a labelling error but it did make me wonder whether there is a software mismatch somewhere and therefore why it is now flashed with a known (4.0.2) firmware.

Hi again  Ive got an update on project westfield. Its good news as Chris at Trigger Wheels (UK) sent me back the mjlj along with a new V4 disc to sort out comms problem.
The only hitch I had was that it wont communicate using Windows Vista on my laptop,so used an older laptop with XP and serial port which gave me instant access and hey presto up and running. I finnished off the hard wiring of the system and gave the car a run using the default map, which was ok.I spent the whole day on Thursday at the rolling road and after sorting the jetting on the bike carbs to make sure fuelling was ok I installed the Working Zetec map from your map library. The result was incredible, the engine is standard apart from the bike carbs and megajolt, and tubular 4into1 exhaust, but after a few tweaks on the mapping we have 144.4bhp and 130 ft lbs of torque.
The next step is to order a pair of cams and vernier pulleys along with some ARP rod bolts and give it another session on the rolling road, but that wont be until weve had some track day time with ther current set up.
I intend to post some pics of the car as soon as I get back to work on Monday, but for now I want to thank Brent for his input and also Chris at Trigger Wheels for his patience
Once again its a great system and affordable :D
