Timing on mini for dummies

Post by dannyb »

Got the MJ fully installed now just got to finish tightening a few things , minor adjustments etc. Not had chance to run it yet but if i rev it hard on drive im getting backfire through what i think is exhaust (Its popping when you let of revs like rally cars do).

I suppose It could be fueling but i'm not 100% sure the trigger wheel is bang on accurate so any chance of a timing guide for checking EDIS ?

I know its timed right on the pulley and i have the marks just unsure of where to go from there, Also i have use of a strobe light but its the type with the lead that clips onto ht lead and also has a wheel for adjusting advance :?

What are your parameters for the MAP on the load bins. I think mine did something like this because as you let off at high rpm your creating more vacuum than you would at idle and i hadn't compensated for this. You may need an extra load bin to give some more (i think) advance for when you let off or just keep it how it is if you like that sort of thing.

The maps im using are ones i have downloaded off here, I tried the aldon yellow but it seemed to hold back mid range so i switched to Midas1.mjlj by h4887 which runs well although i have yet to try it on the road so i suppose i will have to get it running on road, Still want to see how close the timing is set though.

I did a search around and it seems common to have the exhaust pooping when letting of bearing in mind the car is stood still, Can't wait to try it as it instantly seems to rev and sound better than it did on the MG Dizzy. Also i am running on the MG spec plugs which probably need changing?

Engine is MG Metro, K&N Replacement filter, performance manifold, 998 flywheel and RC40 exhaust with a minispares needle which was best suited
