coil pack

Post by bonkeye »

do ihave to use the ford coil pack with the edis 4 VR sensor & module? as i have a saxo VTS engine with the coil pack sits on top of the engine & reaches down to the spark plugs as they are deep in the engine & i dont think i can get HT leads to fit the ford coil pck & have the lenght to the sparks plugs

thanks

Usually alternate coil packs will work, providing they are essentially designed the same way as the Ford coil pack.

Now, does it have individual coil packs per cylinder, or is it a single coil pack with a custom design? Can you attach a picture of the coil pack?

You shouldn't have any problem using another make of coil pack as long as it has the same number of connectors. People have used coil on plugs with edis to success.

Do you have a ford coil pack kicking around?? You can test the impedance of both coilpacks and if they are similar then you should have no problems at all. To test the impedance place an ohm meter between the centre and outside pins of the coil pack where the connector is located.

That looks like a tightly integrated pair of siamese coils rather than a coil-on-plug installation. As such it can be regarded as a standard wasted spark coilpack. If you take a multimeter to the pins and test the resistance and I'll bet that you find that either two of the pins are common or that you will find that they are wired as two pairs, one pair for each half of the coil.

As I had suspected- and agree with cng1. You will find that electrically it is likely identical to the Ford EDIS coil pack. Can you describe the plug(s) supplying the input? is it a 3 terminal plug, or two 2 terminal plugs?

Could 4 wires not mean they have an inbuilt coil driver and therefore could not be used??

Bonkeye can you get your hands on multimeter and test the resistance between each of the pins on the coils? That would give in indication as to how they are wired together

Like some mitsubishi coil packs, the coils are likely wired separately. in the Ford EDIS coil pack the center conductor is wired to VBatt - in this coil the VBatt is spread across two of the conductors.

Try measuring the resistance between the two pairs- numbering from the left, try measuring resistance between 1 &2 and 3 & 4. If you see about .4 to .6 ohms on these pairs, and then no continuity between say, 1 & 3, then it is likely separately wired coil packs.

i havent been able to get my mate to have alook at the coil pack as he's out of the country

but i have found this

1 - Ground to fire coils 1&4
2 - Ground to fire coils 2&3
3 - 12v
4 - Radio Surpressor

any good?

Yeah, sounds good. Use 123, leave 4 open, you don't need it. Treat it just like an EDIS4 coil, 12v and two coil triggers right to the EDIS. On second thought, maybe ground the #4 terminal, maybe it is shielding that needs a ground?

also, it looks like the 2 on the right are the coils with their surrogates paired on the left.

similar to sunrays but with a fancy connector and covering.

ahh it's like a capacitor suppressor found on some coil packs. Just ground it again ;-)
