No advance and can't write map, am I in limp-home mode?

Post by Westfield 11 »

Hi I got my A-series up and running, but I have some problems:

1. my MegaJolt has only 14 pins, how do I connect the PIP and SAW?
2. When I boot up the Configuator it shows RPM and advance, the green lights are on in the lower right corner, and it shows the timing advancing as the rpm rises. But the timing light shows a fixed 10 degree advance.
3. I cannot find the screen where I am supposed to be able to adjust the base timing in the software, it's not in the tools menu.
4. When I try to write to the EDIS box it still shows 0 advance.

It seems like I must be in limp home mode at fixed timing which is good for setting the trigger wheel to TDC. I assume I should rotate it in it's slots until the fixed timing is at the timing set into the Ford code, is that in the documentation? However this does not explain why I cannot run any of my downloaded maps.

I have the pins currently set up so that the SAW is set two pins to the left of the 12v pin. the PIP is set to 3 pins to the left of that. This is the same as indicated in the installation guide, except that I don't have a 16 pin connector.

Hello,

it seems you have a V3 controller (14 pin molex connector) so you should use the V3 installation guide. Here are all of the installation / operation documents for the controller you're using:

Start with this- it could be your problems are due to connector pin mis-matches. Let us know how things work out.

Brent, I am sure that is the problem. I am not connected correctly now and I will move my SAW & PIP to the correct pins tomorrow. Does the V3 have software adjustment for small corrections to base timing? If so I would like to extrapolate from the current fixed 9 to 10 degree timing advance observed today, what is the limp-home timing at idle in the edis? If I know that I can then know how far off my trigger wheel is and if it is close enough to adjust with software. Also what direction should I correct for an observed 10 degrees at idle? Plus 5 degrees if the edis idle timing is 15 degrees?

Westfield, if you have setup the physical timing so that with the engine at tdc then the VR sensor is located 9 teeth before the missing tooth then you should see that with just the EDIS connected and no mjlj then advance should be 10 degrees. This is a default limp home mode built into the EDIS module.

So what you have is bang on and no need to adjust the trigger off set what so ever. What ever values of advance you put into the map or you see on the screen, you should see with a timing light.

All the information is on this website, you just need to do a bit more researching and you will find what you are looking for.

Thanks, I re-read the V3 documentation and found out what I need. I guess I did a pretty good job of installing the trigger wheel......

Made the changes today and it runs like a top! I was able to download a map and write it to the flash memory just as advertised.

Great- now enjoy now! We'd love to see a pic or two and a small write-up in our "powered by" section of the forums!
