1.8 zvh bike carb engine build

Post by gat.tuning »

i know its not powerd by megajolt just yet, but as i already put some of these pictures up on another site i'm part of i might aswell get them up on here also.

the engine came from a 1992 (uk) escort cabriolet 115ps xr3i after removing the head and non-required parts the conversion can begin, i know that i could have just gone 16v but as the other car i'm about to start tinkering with is a full 2.0 16v i thought what the hell make it an 8v besided i had already made the inlet up to marry up to the cvh head.

i also got a few of the adaptor plates laserd off recently also so everything was poiting me in the 8v direction.....

i think when it comes down to it i will probably end up going for a tps set-up.

Got a little further with this engine today spent more time looking for all my old stashed away drill bits and taps than what i did using them  but had to mod a few other parts to mate the 2 together sucessfully lucly i have made quite a few of these zvh engines so everything was done at a nice relaxed pace. 8)

finally got all the required holes drilled and tapped in the end of the block to get the cvh water pump and tentioner on.

had to tap out the front set of oil return holes to stop the oil in the sump becoming contaminated with water......the end result a yellow sump of goo if not done!!!!

Image

and also had to put a breather in the rear of the engine to make the back of the zetec replicate a cvh engine thus allowing me to retain the std cvh breather system.

Image

So thats pretty much it for the engine the last thing i need to do is modify the mk4 escort cvh engine mount so it will attach using the original 3 bolts instead of trying to take a chance and only run the engine with 2 in which is not advised  if one bolt fails you have no back up.....

I'm going out on a limb here, seeing as my knowledge of Ford tuning is limited (not much done on this side of the pond). A ZVH would be a zetec bottom end and CVH head? What are the typical characteristics of such a combo? High compression?

The problem we have over here is that the biggest cvh engine that was fitted as std to our escorts was a 1.6 cvh granted we had a 1.8 cvh fitted to the sierra but it was built with fuel economy in mind and not performance with a few other mods to mount it as a rwd engine all a big hinderance and far easier to do this and convert the newer zetec bottomend it will have far more torque than the original 1.6 as the 80mm dia x 80mm stroke set up found in the smaller cvh will be substituted for a 80mm dia x 88mm stroke in the zetec, the 1st one of these i built almost 10years ago is still going strong now and managed to achieve 175bhp & 210lbft but that had alot more money put into it such as a stage 3 head, 45 dcoe's, lightened flywheel, stainless 4 branch and system so i would suspect i'm looking at about 140-150ish but still much poke than what i have..... 8)

Ah, I see. Zetecs we've got plenty of, but the cars that once had CVHs in them died off years ago :(.
I love the idea of hybrid engines .

its almost the same case over here, the same mod works on the 2.0 zetec as well or for the max capacity a 2.1 over bored 2.0 can also be done but like i said at the begining this is being done for power on a very tight budget just to show what can be done even when you think you dont have a lot to spare for weekend toys.

and i cant cheat with this as thats my sinario at the minute, so what i do with the engine is done on a very tight budget to the point of if i can make it my self i will, rather than part with hard earned as i dont have any to spare.....
