Vista laptop/MJLJ probs!!

Post by boldy205 »

Hello, i have read the other posts which are similar to mine, but did not want to hijack them as my prob is slightly differant im affraid!
I have Vista on my Dell laptop, and am having probs with it talking to my MJLJ, running V3.2.1 configurator. My MJLJ is an early one, the type that has a large connector block, not the phone cable type connector for the wiring harness. At first i had a message at the bottom of the config screen saying could not open port, so i thought i solved this by configurating the port and installing the software for the USB-serial adapter, both working on port 8 and at all the correct settings (4800 etc), now the message has been replaced with 'TIMEOUT READING RUNTIME DATA', all the advance settings are at 0deg, and the TPS dial is not responding, pointing to the fact it not talking to the already mapped (and used for quite some time) MJLJ.
I clicked on the box at top of configurator 'GET IGNITION CONFIGURATION', which i presume should retrieve the map from MJLJ, and for a brief second the previous message is replaced with 'TIMEOUT READING IGNINION CONFIGURATION'. As i mentioned the car does not need to be re mapped, i just need to install the softcut rev limiter.
The USB-serial adapter im using came from Maplins(England) does not have a name on the box but uses Prolific software, thought id mention it as i have seen 'Prolific' mentioned a few times on the problem parts on this forum.
Im not too good with computors, so please be gentile!!
Many thanks for reading, any help is much appreciated .
Matt

Hello,

Apologies for the late reply. If you are seeing "could not open port" you want to make sure the configuration software is set to the same port number as the USB adapter. Could not tell from your description if you got that far.

Also, you mentioned the unit is "already mapped". Can you use the original computer used for mapping to verify connectivity?

Hi Bret, before i matched the ports i had 'COULD NOT OPEN PORT' message, now i have matched the ports i have 'TIMEOUT READING RUNTINE DATA' message at the bottom of configuratour. I dont have the same computor that it was mapped on as it was done by another person.
Would you recomend using a differant PC or maybe a differant serial-USB convertor?
many thanks.

Often there are problems with USB to serial adapters, so it's certainly a possibility you might be having a problem with the unit you have.

The most definitive way to test is to use a computer with a built-in serial port. If you need to use a desktop PC, you may have to temporarily power the unit with a fresh 9V battery.

Let us know what you find out!
