"Could not open port"

This is what I see at the bottom of my program screen. Here are my computer specs.

Sony F630 laptop (2000) with serial port. Upgraded to Windows XP but the old Windows ME is still on the "C" drive. The only other program I have on this computer that might be using the serial port is for Innovate Technologies Lambda reader. However, the only way to connect to the Innovate is via USB cable.

At a loss at to what to look for and so hopefully someone in cyber land can shed some light on this.

Fixed the glitch.

Went back an re-installed Windows XP this time doing a clean install ridding the system of the previous Windows ME.
