strange problem on V2

Post by danncus »

I have a v2 with throttle pot which I have had fitted for the last 5 years or so. there has been a occasional fault - quick history:-

3 yrs ago on a sprint , twice at the start ( whilst giving it full beans at about 5000) the engine totally cut out. I turned the ignition off and rolled to a halt. the car restarted and ran again.
last year on the road whilst overtaking the same thing happened at high revs in third gear, all power lost, whilst the car was moving I turned ign off and on and the engine. ran again
changed plugs to resistor type plugs and also changed VR sensor and all seemed ok 1 race 1 hillclimb 1 track day and 1 rolling road session no probs.
yesterday with cold engine on road, under part throttle, a regular miss fire with also rev counter dropping to zero for a second, going on a local dual carriageway, under hard acceleration all power to engine is lost (and rev counter drops to zero) to restore power, I dipped clutch and when engine rev drop to about 1200rpm with a little pop from exhaust, engine and rev counter run normally.

any ideas where to look?

thanks

Hello,

Look at the EDIS module first- a wholesale cut of power would indicate the EDIS is not firing the plugs at all. So- check your VR sensor, coil pack connections, power and ground to the EDIS module.

A Megajolt failure would manifest itself more as a loss of power, but still a running engine: when the EDIS module cannot connect to the "ECU" (Megajolt, in this case) it defaults to a safe "limp home mode" where the advance is set to 10 degrees.

Let us know what you find out!

hi Brent - We only eve talk when there is a problem!!

I was thinking the same, as the rev counter gets a signal from edis, but why full throttle /hi revs??

Could be a faulty coil pack. We had a coil pack on our turbo MR2 go bad- The engine ran fine under lighter load, but under boost/high RPM we'd observe sharp cuts in power. Turned out one of the secondary windings had a break - it measured open circuit, so it was arcing *inside* the coil pack, as well as across the plugs. As the break in the secondary windings deteriorated the engine ran progressively worse.

Sad part was that the flames we were generating out the exhaust went away as we fixed the problem :)

I would also double check your wiring, especially looking at the grounds and make sure they have good clean contacts and solid solder joints with no frayed wires. Just as an idea

will do - - thanks.

I'm tracking down spares (coil and edis)

I ran it yesterday afternoon and it ran badly and parked it on the driveway
I took it out last night - and it ran perfectly up to 7000 revs in 4th!

Update.

spent an afternoon trying to find a EDIS. found one and fitted it to the car. went for a test - same problem...

put the 2nd hand coil on, and the problem seems to have gone! (fingers crossed11)

thanks for the input..

Danny
