Crank sensors, what have I got

Post by Oliver Sedlacek »

Why does the world need so many different VR crank sensors? Does anyone know how I can identify them?

Are the pin connections all the same and from the same supplier / manufacturer?

If so, and I am by no means an expert in crank sensors, it may just be that the packaging (housing) is just shaped differently to suit differing vehicle applications where space may be at a premium?

They're all identical as far as Megajolt/EDIS is concerned.

Top to bottom you've got an amercian V8 sensor, a UK/EU Escort/Fiesta/Sierra sensor and a Focus/Mondeo spec one.

RE the wiring: worst case you'll have to reverse the leads to get it to run. 50% chance of getting it right with only two wires.

That was the second to last connection I made, last was the coilpack leads, another 50-50 shot!

Thanks for that. I checked the output and electrically they are all equivalent. The top one uses a different connector, but it's mostly about shape. I was using the top one, but the car has developed an intermittent loss of power. I've changed the EDIS and coilpack with no improvement, so now I'm changing the wiring and mounting bracket so that I can use the middle sensor. I've got to the point where the engine runs, so next up is a road test.
