Testing coilpack input?

Post by paulc »

i'm trying to troubleshoot if 1/2 my coilpack is blown.

what sort of tests can i do with a multimeter on the coilpack input to see where the problem is?

Presumably it'd be quite easy.

Take all four spark plugs out, fit them up so that they can earth on your block and get someone t ocrank your engine over. If half of it is blown, then only two of your plugs will spark... but then I'm new to the whole EDIS thing (actually new to electronical jiggery pokery full stop) but that's what my simplistic brain is saying.

Saves blowing up your multimeter with oooohjars of volts too... :D

i know they are not sparking (plugs are brand new)

i am trying to deduce if it's the coilpack or the MJ unit or somewhere in between.

Remove MJ from the equation, unplug it, for instance, and the EDIS should still operate in Limp Home mode. If it's not then it's something that's not related to MJ,that'll cut it down to EDIS, VR sensor or coilpack.

One way of testing a coil pack is where the ht leads attach, measure the resistance between outputs 1 and 4, then 2 and 3 and they should be about the same. It will also be quite a low value say around 1 ohm, i think???? This test is not always a good way of testing as there is no load and the coils are naturally quite a low resistance/impedance. If one side is reading 0 Ohms or infinite Ohms then that side is caput obviously!!!!

After testing the ht (high tension) side of the coil pack you can also test the lt (low tension) side where the 12v and the 2 coil outputs of the EDIS go. With this measure pins 1 and 2, then 2 and 3 and they should be about the same, again quite a low value of around 1 Ohm, for sure this time. You can then measure across pins 1 and 3 and it should be a higher value than one side of the lt side but not a sum of the two sides together.

Funky Diver recommends a good test, because it will find shorted turns or breaking down insulation that won't show up with an ohm meter. If a couple plugs don't spark, switch the EDIS coil driver wires. If the same plugs don't spark, its the coil. If different plugs, its the EDIS driver output. Bruce Roe
