not connecting to laptop

Post by Swedge »

ok so i tested my ecu in my room with a 9v battery using a usb converter on my pc and it worked fine

i managed to get an old laptop with xp on it with an rs232 port on it, i plugged it in but still nothing, how do i make the software run from the rs232 port rather than 1 of the com ports?

i connected it straight to the rs232 port and still get the timeout reading cylinder count, in device manager it is port1 (communications pot) is that the rs232 yeah?

i also set megajolt software to that as well but its still giving me the same error

ive had the ecu working with the converter on my pc but now it isnt working at all

If you want to use the onboard serial port that will almost certainly be com1 - it isn't guaranteed though, I've sometimes seen onboard modems grab that so do check the windows device manager. If you want to use the usb-serial adaptor then you would need to change it to match the listing in device manager.

Take a look in device manager and see if there are any other serial ports or modem devices listed.

All the ECUs have a base map on them as standard so you can still use the vehicle even without being access the ECU. In any case once you have the EDIS setup on there you can run in limp home mode even with the ECU disconnected so you shouldn't be completely stranded. In fact running with the ECU unplugged is a great diagnostic test of the rest of your installation.

As mentioned before, the Megajolt will work with the factory loaded Ignition Map.

When running the engine with the EDIS and Megajolt installed, you can verify the Megajolt is operational by observing the ignition timing change (while revving engine) by using a timing light.

If you can observe this, then the problems are only around communicating with your laptop.

The good thing is you've already verified the Megajolt is working when you hooked it up to the first PC. You might want to try a different laptop (friend's, etc) as a test.

what about the cranking advance? will it still start even though i cant remember if i put any values in whilst it was on my main pc
