Triger Wheel Design
Hey guys
I thought it would be a good idea to get a a sticky made up with all the different triggerwheel designs so anyone who is fitting a megjolt themselves can get ideas of how to fit it to their car/engine with dimensions used, angles for tdc, etc, just to make life a little easier for people.
If possible post pictures of the coil pack location, trigger wheel and VR sensor mounting location and bracket and include approx. prices of the different parts.
Here is a standard format to follow, which should help build a database.
Subject: Engine Type and size ie 4AGE 1800, A-series 1275
Vehicle: ie VW Golf, Austin Mini
Year:
Trigger Wheel Source: home made (inc measurements if poss or diagram), mounting position, Purchased bespoke one plus brief fitment
Picture of Triggerwheel.
VR Sensor Source: Make, model, year, part number ie Ford Ka 2001
VR Location/mounting bracket: where located, how built, where bought
Picture of VR Location.
COP/Coil Pack and Ignition Leads: source, make, part numbers
Picture of Coil Pack location.

1275 A-Series
Vehicle: Austin Mini
Year: 1989
Trigger Wheel Source: Made at local engineering shop for £70. Teeth are 10mm deep as VR sensor is located at 90 degs to wheel. Used a 998 pulley without damper. Rivets ground out and holes threaded. Triggerwheel is mounted with 4 bolts. 10 deg adjustment in triggerwheel. Triggerwheel diameter equals the pully diameter.
VR Sensor Source: Ford Ka
VR Location/mounting bracket: Radiator now mounted at the front and used the old radiator mount bracket to form a bracket to now hold the VR sensor as in picture. Strap holds Vr sensor. Vr sensor can only be adjusted in distance from wheel.
COP/Coil Pack and Ignition Leads: Believed to be off an old Ford Fiesta with a flat bottom so easily located on bulkhead. Leads were for a Fiesta from an auto factors.

warning for rubber damping on timing pulleys
I was out driving the other day and the car was running great! untill i heard lots of misfires and the engine would not run. some pulleys on cars have like a rubber centre,kind of a shock absorbing material,this failed and and all timing was lost.just wanted to share this info.luckally no other damaged occured.lee

Subject: VW counterflow 1784cc 8v
Vehicle: VW Rabbit (Mk 1 Golf in the rest of the world)
Year: 1982 (body), 1990 (engine)
Trigger Wheel Source: 1990 Ford Escort (canadian). I welded the trigger wheel to the stock pulley, and then filed down each tooth to provide the same gap at the VR sensor surface. This also served as a basic balancing, to offset the 'eyeballed' positioning of the trigger wheel.
VR Sensor Source: 1990 Ford Escort (canadian)
VR Location/mounting bracket: stock VW Golf power steering bracket
COP/Coil Pack and Ignition Leads: 1990 Ford Escort (coilpack and ignition leads)
I cut down the stock dizzy, capped it, and left it in place to drive the oil pump. I mounted the coils in exactly the same spot as the original cap would have gone, on a bracket over the cut-down dizzy.
Vehicle: VW Rabbit (Mk 1 Golf in the rest of the world)
Year: 1982 (body), 1990 (engine)

*bought a piece of 72 tooth gear stock, about 35mm in diameter, mail order from the US
*had a machine shop cut a slice about 25mm thick, and drill it for press fit on the (gutted) distributor shaft)
*press fit the gear
*ground two opposite teeth off to make a 2 x 36-1 gear
VR sensor:
*bought a mazda RX7 FC series Crank Angle Sensor ie the whole unit.
*similar size to a distributor, and inside has 2 x small VR sensors. one for each car!
*mounted it on a hand made plate inside the distributor
Coil Pack:
*used ford coil pack.
*had correct length leads made through an AutoOne spare parts shop (australia, where these leads are almost unknown). $100 for 4

1981 jeep cherokee 360v8
trigger wheel:
*drilled holes in the harmonic balancer, so the gaps between the holes operate as the teeth
*you only get on shot at placing the holes in the right spot, and particularly cutting the metal out between the correct two, so measure twice and cut once!
VR sensor:
*used the ford part, mounted on a home made bracket.
*i didnt bother with the plug; rather i put crimp connectors on the wires, put them on the VR sensor and filled the socket with epoxy glue.
Coil Packs:
*used ford coil packs, mounted on home made brackets above the manifold. believe it or not, the engine bay is a bit cramped so there was no other convenient location
*again, didnt use the plugs on the coil packs, but stuck the wires on with crimp connectors and filled the sockets with glue.
*used the leads i got with the coil packs, but cut them to the right length and crimped new ends on to them.
trigger wheel:

I bought some 100mm M8x1.25 bolts, tack welded them into the back of the crank pulley, lopped the bolt heads off, put on the accessory pulley, mounted the reluctor wheel and cut the remaining studs down to size. IMO it fits pretty well and with some Essna nuts the wheel shouldn't be going anywhere. The red dot is for the sensor alignment.

Trigger wheel ford Cleveland V8
Alluminium stock turnrd down to hold TW and 8 groove pulley. Pickup not mounted yet but tooth marked with red dot shows where it has to go, so the two water pump snout bolts look like they have another job comming up.

My installation on a 440 MoPar (same for 350, 361, 383, 413, and 426 wedge engines, but not sure about 426 Hemi's) is on the site here at the URL below.
