New to Sensors

As someone who only has experience with premade OBDII plugins that talk with smart phone apps, does anyone know of a good online resource to quickly transition into the setup of sensors like those being discussed in this portion of the forum? I can't wait to dive into this and get more information from my car but I want to have a solid understanding of what is being installed, how it will talk to the Race Capture device, and how to troubleshoot data that doesn't record correctly.
