Bluetooth based OBD2
I know it has been discussed, but thought it should be called out here as well. I guess I'm wondering what the limitations will be for usefulness of this kind of data. Is it too "laggy" or "choppy"? Will it be simple to align it with data from the GPS and inertial sensors?
It depends. Most of these OBD Bluetooth devices read from the SAE standard PID's. And the more PID's that are read the less frequently they get updated. So if you only need to record just a few signals then the refresh rate might be acceptable. As far as aligning the data, I've found that a common marker signal between both DAQ systems is good (such as a brake switch or accelerator pedal stomp in quick succession) but that might not work for you since either the Race Capture can't record the same info as the PID's, or you'd be unnecessarily slowing down data acquisition by recording an extra PID.
