Can I mount the units upside down on roof of car?

It would keep things nice and tidy and out of way. If so, what are the downsides, especially for the live telemetry portion.

The only problem with that is, because it's so high up, body roll will skew your accelerometer and yaw sensor readings. Ideally you want the RCP mounted at the same level as the roll center of the car (which is typically around the level of the wheel hubs). The further it is from the roll center the more readings will be skewed by body roll one way or another.

It is a good place to mount, aside from the valid issues GameboyRMH indicated, you can re-map the accelerometer channels to account for the inverted position.

Cellular should be ok, providing the antenna is unobstructed. Important: the antenna should be oriented vertically, not horizontally.
