Modifications: 8.0 to 1 compression chrome top pistons Nickosil aluminium liners. Chargecooler. SE manifold and Turbo. colder plugs. Tripple core coolant rad, uprated oil cooler.
Chassis: Lotus with adjustable shocks and HISPEC motorsport brake conversion.
Notes: Knock seensor with gauge in cab. The engine kept destroying itself due to detonation, the lotus dizzy had advance wieghts only and went from 12 degrees to 28 degrees at 3500rpm and that was it...... 28 degrees at full boost is asking for trouble, the only option was some form of electronic mappable control, the MJLT fitted the bill perectly. The motor is so smooth and pulls so strong (70-90 in just over 3 sec in top gear) that i have reduced the rev limit from 7000 to 6000 and don't miss the extra 1000 at all. It will also pull from 1000 rpm to redline in 4th and not miss a beat LOVE IT!!!!

I am not that brave!!!!! 24psi absolute that is 24-14(atmospheric) which gives a grand total of 10PSI.... The first bin is the cranking speed advance setting and this engine starts very well with a lot of advance....40degrees is a good setting for cranking.... this engine can be a bit of a pig when hot to start on standard advance..sierra2dr wrote: oh right,I got carried away there. To prevent detonation you may install an individual cylinder retard processor http://www.jandssafeguard.com/VampirePage/Vampire.html
The control system retards only the knocking cylinders, maximizing power while protecting the engine.
The system also features boost retard and nitrous or switched retard.
The boost retard section includes Start and Rate controls, allowing you to tailor the retard curve to your needs.
FYI:
Here, attached, please find 88 Esprit Turbo dizzy mechanical advance/retard mapping. You may compare these empirical findings to your own map to confirm or tweak yours.

Here is what we did:
we recorded the map as it is on my ’88 turbo. We needed this as a reference because SHB662 did rebuild his distributor and wanted life measurements to compare.
Here they are:
Centrufugal advance:
First we disconnected al the (vacuum/turbo) tubes of the distributor. Then started to increase the rpm and measured the advance whith digital timing equipment.
(10° Advace at 1000 rpm is the initial setting)

Vacuum advance:
Al tubes still disconnected. Then connect a tube at the “turbo” pressure side of the vacuum plenum of the distributor. At a steady rpm of 1000, we started to feed pressure to the vacuum advance and measured the preignition whit digital timing equipment.

Thank you Peter that I could use your digital timing equipment for measuring also my ignition advance (see tables below).
In the Lotus service notes it is indicated that the centrifugal advance is 11° extra at 2000 rpm and only 8° extra at 5000 rpm. Initially I thought that this 8°at 5000 rpm was a mistake and I would expect rather 18° extra advance!!!? I still wonder how the centrifugal advance can decrease at a higher rpm? What special mechanism is inside the original distributor? anyway regarding to Peter's results it seems to be correct!
The distributor in my esprit is rebuild see my topic "distributor issuesof carb-turbo(1988)" posted at 25 oct 2008.
I wonder if I should take actions to improve the curve of my centrifugal advance?
