Basic conection to computer

Post by snapperpaul »

My first post on this forum although i have been looking.
Building a 7 kit and recently purchased a Pinto 2.1, injection head, 285 cam and bike carbs, came with Megajolt with MAP and dyno chart saying 128bhp. Now i want to start looking at further tuning but i no nothing about what i have in the Megajolt. So, how do i connect the Laptop to the Megajolt and what software do i need on the laptop.
a)to look at what the Megajolt has at the moment
b)to tune/modify etc.

My knowledge at this time is so basic that i may need diagrams just to connect the leads however once i can connect and the software is on the PC I have a friend that should be able to help.

please start slowly, i will catch up.

I run a similar spec engine in my Capri and will be going Megajolt later in the year... does yours run with a Throttle Position Sensor or MAP sensor?

I'm currently running a stage 3 head with a 285 cam and a 38DGAS with a standard distributor and I'm getting 160BHP (flywheel) Hoping that the Magajolt will improve the low end and mid range.

What ignition map are you running as I can't find a Pinto one with MAP sensor anywhere... they all seem to be TPS ones... If I could have a copy of your ignition map it would be a great starter for me as our engines are very similar.

Unfortunately I can't really help with the software side of things as I havn't got into it yet myself.

Cheers

You need a PC - preferable a laptop so you can take it to the car.

For a (relatively) trouble free time, it would be best to have:
- a real 9 pin serial port on the laptop
- Windows XP
- a 'straight-through' ( ie pin1-pin1, pin2-pin2 etc) 9 pin to 9 pin D-type cable from the laptop to the MJLJ

Do EXACTLY what it says http://picasso.org/mjlj/?q=node/6. You can't miss anything out, or do anything extra. The only change you are allowed is that the java version (j2re1.4.2_04 on that web page) might be different. A later version will be fine, but I wouldn't try with an earlier version.

Download the MJLJ Configurator, as described, make sure the MJLJ is powered up (can use a 9v PP3 battery if its not in the car), run the Configurator and look/change the map as required. Use the Run Time menu item to see what the MJLJ is doing whan it's running the engine.

Report back your success!

MAP map

Post by snapperpaul »

MartinM's post will allow me to connect up to the Megajolt as it is not in the car yet, the engine was too good a deal to miss but wont be fully instaled for a couple of months yet.
Yes i run MAP and a 285 in an injection head on a 2.1 with a thinner gasket giving about 1:9.7 compression, Oh and quad GSXR carbs this is giving 128bhp and 135 ft/lbs so plenty of room for improvement. I am suprised you get 160 on a DGAS and a 285 but you must have a good head.
If you can give me your email when i decipher the Megajolt i will send you the map.
