im still confused

Post by 79porsche924 »

Im mounting my trigger wheel and sensor, I have my engine at top dead center on the compression stroke of # 1 cylinder, the engine rotates clockwise looking at the free end. I have my sensor mounted at 90dg or the 3 o'clock position and i have know where else to mount it, im confused on where I should put the missing tooth on the trigger wheel, using a dg wheel, 0dg = 12 O'clock 90dg = 3 o'clock ect...

Right now I have my missing tooth located at 12 o'clock position is this right? I think it is, but something tells me it should be at the 6 o'clock position. I have read the forum topics on this subject and im more confused now then I was before. Hopefully you guys can help me!

if your sensor is at 3 o clock and that's the only place you can put it then you need to place your missing tooth at 6 o clock as the sensor needs to be 90 degrees befor the missing tooth(on a 4 cylider set up)

That old chestnut

I've just had this argument. I'm hoping to see if it all runs this afternoon so I can't yet give you an absolute answer to this.

However, the result of all the arguing was that the gap should pass the sensor 90 degrees before the engine gets to TDC.

So.....you need the gap to be at 6 o'clock (given that your sensor is at 3 and the engine at TDC). If you mentally rewind the engine by 90 degrees then this would move the gap back to the sensor at 90 BTDC. So, the sensor passes the gap and 90 degrees later you get to TDC.

Does that make any sense?

6 o'clock

Good luck.

Now I think I understand

So, when the engine is at TDC the gap should be 90 degrees PAST the sensor. For some reason this concept is easier for me to grasp.

79porsche924, I've just got mine running today....lovely....with the timing wheel and VR arranged just as discussed:

"when the engine is at TDC the gap should be 90 degrees PAST the sensor"

Good luck.
