Function Generator

Can anyone tell me the spec of a signal/function generator that is capable of generating all the signal types I might expect to capture on the RCP?

I want to simulate sensors in the warmth of my lounge.

I've seen this, but it seems (too) cheap:

A simple potentiometer would work if you want to manually measure values; otherwise something like that would probably work.
