COILX and GM 4pin HEI

Trying to get an RPM signal from a V-8 chevy with an older HEI 4pin distributor. I hooked up the COILX but get no data on RPM channel 1. I believe the HEI puts out a 12 PWM signal so I thought maybe I could run it directly to RPM channel one, but I know there are spikes and don't want to damage the RCP unit. I verified the grounds and +5v to the COILX. Any thoughts on how I could trouble shoot this without access to a scope? thanks.
