Newbee / rpm only

Post by alsehendo34 »

Anybody ever leave out the map and TPS & run RPM only advance only like a centrifuge only distributor would? (For an old VW).

I have a unit on a highly tuned Vauxhall Red Top that runs to 8250rpm on RPM advance only. It's a resonably long story why it doesn't have MAP or TPS, but it's fine without it...would probably be better with TPS though!

Which parts would you then leave out of the unit when building? Just the MAP sensor, or other things too?

All the components in the white outlined areas on the board (see the picture on http://picasso.org/mjlj/), i.e:
- all the TPS optional components (4 capacitors, 2 resistors, a diode and an inductor)
- all the MAP sensor optional components (the MAP sensor, 2 capacitors and a resistor)

You could leave out the parts as mentioned below.. Or you could use a TPS provisioned unit, and instead of attaching it to a Throttle Position Sensor, you could have a dash mounted control that allows you to shift your entire timing advance up and down.

Each 'load' row of the ignition map could be slightly offset + or - from your base. Then you can drive around and do some rough tuning on the fly.

I am installing my unit in a very hot type1 vw(2165cc, 170 hp), and built it with TPS. The Ford TPS off the Escort is easily adaptable to one of the throttle shafts on my Webers. I would suggest building it with TPS and then you could just not use it, it's only a couple dollars in parts........
