BMW E46 330ci not displaying CAN data

Post by dlaud »

Noob question, I've done a lot of reading on this but can't seem to make any headway.

Car is being built as Spec E46.

Wires are tapped using the Autosport E46 integration cable
https://www.autosportlabs.com/product/b ... ion-cable/

in the OBD-II port power per the wiki instructions:
https://wiki.autosportlabs.com/BMW_E46_CAN

Only data showing are location (long/lat) and battery.
The E46 presets are downloaded.
CAN BUS Rate is 500kb/s

Suggestions on how to fix what I'm doing wrong?

When I first installed mine I tapped what appeared to be the CAN wires above the dead pedal as shown in the instructions and didn't have any luck getting data. I think there are 2 pairs of twisted wires in there. I found it easier to tap the CAN wires on the steering angle sensor, works great.

dlaud,

Did moving the wires allow you to see data?

@rkymthiker - thank you for this idea, I'll be attempting this soon.
@brentp - I haven't tried tapping the CAN wires by the steering angle sensor yet, once I do, I'll update this post.

So yes, tapping the (steering angle sensor) wires behind the dashboard worked!
So happy to finally have oil temp and other CAN data.
Easier access and what appears to be more reliable from this small sample of two.
