Mega(jolt)view

Post by robertstreeter »

I have just started work on a visual display unit for the megajolt. I'm not planning anything complicated. Well, not at the moment. At the moment its just gonna be a box with 4 leds for the outputs, one for shift light and a ten led bargraph rev counter. I'm looking into some sort of readout for MAP and Advance but haven't got a clue about the latter. Anyone got any ideas? I'm sure it would have very little use when compleete but I like flashing lights - simple as that.

IDEAS: Every tuner out there

Post by 4600cc »

IDEAS:

Every tuner out there currently, has a display of some sort, that allows tuning, outputs guages, and even measures quarter mile times. There is no reason why Megajolt cant do that, as a matter of fact, it will be able to using this new tuner Im writing, a version which was long way coming (virtually 2 years of development). Basically, if you can tuck away all that functionality into a box with a display, it will be cool.

Second idea, since Megajolt is custom, there is practically nothing more custom than Megajolt or Megasquirt project, it appeals to customizers, such as Royal and Unique. Thus, make a customizable controls (less display), then builders can use a monitor to make something 1 of a kind.

In my opinion there is no point in doing a project like Megaview, it just looks weired, and out of place. Fit for a race car, but nothing else. Keypad and custom monitor build like a modern navigation system is much better. Think a small PC.

I'm planning on fitting a touch screen and a PC into Otly at some point. Partly as it might be useful for tuning, GPS etc etc but mostly because it'd be a good laugh in a classic Land Rover ;-)

I thought, when the time came, I'd try and program a little interface to show RPM and even, god forbid, fuel consumption although the latter might be too frightening! I could also add some speakers and use it as a sound system, so my vote would be for a PC based system.

all well and good but..... my old series 3 has no roof! So i'm limited to weatherproof/removable electronics.

It'd be handy if someone could come up with a small touchscreen unit that would display the software and allow the map to be tweaked too, similar to a PDA, I'm not sure if the current source code could be adapted into a self contained unit though?

My laptop is seriously looking the worse for wear.

It's clear there are many interesting ways to solve this problem, so there's no 'best' way!

- Dedicated display - a'la megaview or similar
- Touchscreen / LCD display
- Palm / Windows mobile software - search for this, someone already wrote some MJLJ software to do this!
- Gameboy-based controller - this is one I brought up a while back- I have a gameboy advance SP in the drawer waiting for some attention

I am considering the development of one or more of the above.

For a windows mobile device, the application framework I used to write the Configuration software allows me to easily port the majority of it to a different platform, so an abbreviated version of the software could be made.

Robert, I too have liked the idea of a car PC but I don't think it would be rugged enough for a racecar application. However, if I were to do it, I'd source my components from here, you might've already seen it:

http://www.mini-itx.com/store/ (I think this is a UK site), what appears to be the US version is http://www.mini-box.com

The Voom PC and a DIN-sized 7" LCD display that pops out of the dash would be an effective and clean solution. They also make compact DC-DC power supplies that will let you run the computer right off of the car's 12v DC. Very slick!

When it comes to my software, windows platforms, even linux is not a problem. As a matter of fact it already can do what rramdoc wants.

A PC dont have to have a monitor, it could have a control panel.

But as far as monitors go, a cool unit will fit into double DIN or similarly sized space, and I believe there are some radios that include a monitor in them. Basically something that tacks away nicely. Touch screen? Dont have to be touch screen. Currently this is an overkill for Megajolt, it will have to have launch control, traction control, and rapid acceleration to really need something like that.
