I think all the chips are available mail order from RS http://rswww.com
I can only imagine that the chip was in backwards.

BANG! ....oops!
Following the instructions carefully... i have installed VR sensor EDIS4 and TPS to the car. it ran fine. when i connected up the MJLJR and turned on the ignition, after a four second delay, the chip to the right of the crystal went bang and a piece of silicone embeded itself into my neck!
i have a few questions whilst i wait for the ambulance:
can i get a replacement chip localy? (UK)
what have i done wrong?
should i apply direct pressure to the wound?
thanks in advance

Wow- I never thought
Wow- I never thought electronics could attack like that.
Check the voltages, and check the chip orientation. That's kind of a freakish accident.
Hope you're OK.

thanks guys- yes i'm fine i
thanks guys- yes i'm fine i may have been over reacting a little bit. i will check orienation tonight. how would i put new firmware on new chip, it was (forgive my ignorance) NOT the MAX232.
having checked the chip,
having checked the chip, it seemed to be in the correct way round ie with the little semi circle faceing the crystal.
checkng
my friend who assembled the board did the checks outlined in the assembly book - buti plugged everything in, edis pip & saw, tps 2x swiched +12 , 2x gnd unswiched and 9pin female to 9pin female serial lead (labeled as NULL ?) with the p.c.plugged in. i think i have found the KX8 processor at rs but dont understand all this bootloader stuff (help!)
Null and Void
You should not have used a "NULL" serial cable to attach the MJLJ to your computer. These special cables are only for attaching one computer to another computer. Use a standard cable to attach a device to the computer.
But, that shouldn't have made the unit blow. Some of the other wires are probably wrong.

thanks for the advice. i shouln't take too much advice from spotty teenagers, have found fault on board now if only i can work out how to load the KX8!
